Fratelli Alinari (Italian photography studio and publisher, 1854-1920)
|
Note: Fratelli Alinari was operated by the three Alinari brothers, Leopoldo, Giuseppe and Romualdo. It was Leopoldo who, with the help of Giuseppe Bardi, opened a small photographic studio in Florence in 1850 or 1852. The commercial distribution rights were granted to Bardi and the studio was known as "Fratelli Alinari presso Bardi" (Alinari Brothers for Bardi). In 1854 Leopoldo bought the business from Bardi and along with his two brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo, he formed the company "Fratelli Alinari Fotografi Editori". Leopoldo was the photographer, Giuseppe the organizer and Romualdo was the administrator. Fratelli Alinari began by reproducing works of art and by making views of Tuscany, Rome and Pisa. In 1865 Leopoldo died, leaving the business in the hands of Giuseppe and Romualdo. After the deaths of Giuseppe in 1890 and Romualdo in 1891, the business "Fratelli Alinari I.D.E.A" was run from 1892 to 1918 by Leopoldo's son Vittorio with technical collaboration from Giuseppe's son Arturo. In 1920 Fratelli Alinari became a public company absorbed by the publishing house "Istituto di Edizioni Artistiche". Italian print-making and photography firm, Florence; estab. 1854. The firm was comprised of the brothers Leopoldo, Giuseppe and Romualdo Alinari. |
