Note: The city of Offenburg is located in the Kinzig River Valley in southwestern Germany at the edge of the Black Forest. It was founded by Zähringen margraves on the site of a Roman settlement, and was an important free city from 1289 to 1802. It is the major city of the Ortenau wine and fruit district. Heavily damaged in World War II, it still preserves much of its historic Gothic and Baroque architecture and is a popular tourist spot. The 2004 estimated population was 58,900.
