Note: The town of Verden is located on the Aller River, 57 miles southwest of the northern German city of Hamburg. It was the seat of an important bishopric in the 9th century. It was ceded to Sweden in 1648, and became part of Prussia from 1866. The 2004 estimated population was 26,900.
