Note: The city of Emden is located at mouth of Ems River, on the North Sea in the northern German state of Lower Saxony. Founded about 800 CE, it developed as a port for trade with the Baltic countries, and dominated Ems trade by the 15th century. It became the center for Dutch-German trade and a haven for Calvinist refugees during the Dutch war of independence in the 16th century. With a manmade change in the course of the Ems River that moved its estuary farther from Emden, the city's trade and prosperity declined. It was heavily bombed in World War II, but the port facilities escaped major damage. Some other surviving structures include the remains built in 1616, the Late Gothic Great Church of 1648, the 16th-century town hall, and the 17th-century East Friesland Museum. After the end of World War II the city grew and thrived again, becoming one of Germany's busiest ports. Major economic activities include shipbuilding, herring fishing, oil refining, and heavy industry. The 2004 estimated population was 51,500. |
