Note: Tyrol is a mountainous region in southwestern Austria, bordering both Germany and Italy. Historically it has been in a strategic position guarding the Brenner Pass. Originally inhabited by Rhaetic tribes, it went to Rome in 15 BCE. Teutonic tribes took it over at the end of the western Roman Empire, then the Franks. The Hapsburgs ruled it from 1363 until 1918. After World War I, South Tyrol became part of Italy, which it remains to this day. |
