Note: The eastern German city of Plauen is situated on the slopes of the Weisse Elster river valley in the Vogtland. It was probably founded by Slavs in the 12th century, receiving its charter in 1220. It went to Bohemia in 1327, then to Saxony in 1466. It was the flourishing center of the textile industry in Saxony from the 15th century, and became famous for lace making. It was badly damaged in World War II. Surviving historic architecture includes the restored 12th-century Johanneskirche, the 1250 former castle of the Vögte, the imperial advocates who ruled the city in medieval times, now law courts, the old town hall rebuilt in 1548, and the Lutheran church built 1693-1708. Still famous for lace making, the modern city now produces a variety of textiles, has a mixture of heavy and light industries, and serves as a railway hub. The calculated population for 2005 was 69,378.
