Note: Franken was one of the five major dukedoms of early medieval Germany, occupying an area now divided among what is now Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Palatinate, and Hesse. It was named after the Germanic tribe of the Franks, who settled it in the early 6th century CE, Claimed by the Merovingian dynasty in the early 8th century, it became part of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia in the 9th century. Franken's dukes founded the Franconian (or Salian) line of German emperors. By the 13th century, its fragmentation into smaller principalities began. The name of the old duchy survives in the northwest section of Bavaria, in the names of the districts of Upper, Middle, and Lower Franken. |
