Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe), part of the historic Three Fires Confederacy. The reservation is located in Allegan County, Michigan. Though the Gun Lake Tribe inhabited the Kalamazoo River Valley at the turn of the 19th century, it was not granted a federally-recognized reservation until 1821. At that time, the Tribe was a signatory on the Treaty of Chicago, which allocated 3 square miles for the Tribe in present-day Kalamazoo. In 1827, however, the Tribe signed the Treaty of St. Joseph and, in doing so, ceeded its 1821 reservation territory to the US government in exchange for payment and land. The US did not obey this treaty, and the Tribe, now landless, was forcibly relocated north to the Bradley Indian Mission. From 2001 to 2005, Tribal members worked to re-establish original reservation lands and pursue economic development under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. |
