Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Poarch Creek Band of Indians. The reservation spans approximately 229 acres in rural Escambia County, Alabama, with off-reservation trust lands spanning Elmore, Montgomery, and Monroe Counties, Alabama and Escambia County, Florida. It is the only federally-recognized reservation in the state of Alabama. The Muscogee Creek Nation, from which the Poarch Creek Band of Indians descend, occupied all of present-day Alabama and Georgia prior to European settlement, its members suffered forced removal in the Trail of Tears. Some tribal members, however, remained on the Creek Nation's ancestral lands despite settler attempts at colonial displacement. The Poarch Creek Band of Indians did not receive a federally-recognized reservation until 1984, when the Bureau of Indian Affairs allocated land in trust for the Poarch Creek Band. |
