Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans approximately 864,158 acres in Cass, Hubbard, Beltrami, and Itasca Counties, Minnesota; about 300,000 acres of reservation land comprises surface area of the three big lakes. 75% of the National Chippewa Forest lies within the reservation, occupying the largest portion of the reservation land. Consequently, the Leech Lake Band owns the smallest percentage of its reservation of any of Minnesota's tribes. The reservation encompasses eleven distinct communities, with Cass Lake being the largest. Though members of the Ojibwe Chippewa bands relocated to Leech Lake in the mid-to-late 1700s, they did not receive a federal reservation until a treaty dated 1855. Prior to the reservation's creation, the Leech Lake Band forcibly ceeded much of its traditional territory around Leech Lake. Subsequent treaties and executive orders dated 1864, 1873, and 1874 further solidified and enlarged the reservation boundaries.
