Hierarchy of Lake District (general region)  Lake District (general region)

Note: Famed as a scenic region and national park, covering over 850 square miles and comprising the highest English mouintains and the principal English lakes, including Windermere. The geological structure of the area is in the shape of a dome, with pre-Carboniferous rocks forming the peaks and lake-filled valleys that were formed by glacial action. The area has been historically isolated, due to the difficult passage of lakes and mountains, which are surrounded by moorlands and peat bogs. It was traversed by two Roman roads; the area was deforested after the Norse invasions.
