Note: This is a historic reservation, parts of which are currently being revitalized and stewarded by the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation. The Prairie Band's reservation lands, now totaling 128 acres, are located on the grounds of the Band's 19th century reservation near the present-day village of Shabbona in Dekalb County, Illinois. Though the Potawatomi peoples, from whom the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation descend, originated in and occupied the Great Lakes region since prior to European contact, tribal members were ultimately forced to migrate west of the Mississippi pursuant to the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Potawatomi tribal members migrated to Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas. The reservation was first established in the early 1830s, when the Treaty of Prairie du chien allocated roughly 1280 acres (2 square miles) of land in Illinois for the Prairie Band. While many Potawatomi moved from Illinois to Kansas, Chief Shab-eh-nay and a dozen members of his family settled on the Illinois land. In 1849, however, this reservation was illegally sold. It was not until 2006 that the Prairie Band was able to purchase 128 acres of unjustly sold land for the tribe. Since 2014, the Prairie Band has been working to put this land in federal trust.
