Note: In the Nile opposite Aswān city; 18th- & 19th-cen. pharaohs built a large temple to Khnum, Sati & Anuket; rock tombs of Old & Middle Kingdom nobility are in the cliff on the west bank; known as the "door of the south" in the Old Kingdom when it was the starting point for Sudanese trade; administrative center for Egyptian-controlled Nubia in the Middle Kingdom; part of Nubia in the New Kingdom but returned to being a frontier fortress by the Saite period; site of 2 Nubian villages in modern times. |
