Note: Kells is a small market town situated on the River Blackwater in County Meath in Ireland. Its famous monastery was founded here by St. Columba ca. 550. The monks of that establishment in the 9th century produced the famous illuminated Book of Kells, noted as the best surviving example of early Celtic Christian manuscript art, now in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Historic architecture remaining includes the ruins of the monastery, the house of St. Columba, later made into a church, a round tower, and ancient Celtic crosses. The 2003 estimated population was 4,400.
