Note: Ancient Syrian city that prospered especially during the 2nd millennium BCE and was frequently named as Qatanum in the royal archives of Mari on the Euphrates. Site of temple dedicated to Sumerian goddess Nin-E-Gal, first excavated from 1924 to 1929. an archaeological site in the Wadi il-Aswad, a tributary of the Orontes. It consists of a large tell, one of the largest Bronze Age towns in western Syria. The tell is located at the edge of the limestone-plateau of the Syrian desert towards the fertile Homs-Bassin. Razed and burned, probably by Hittites in 1375 BCE.
