Note: Aleppo developed on a crossroads of caravan routes. It was taken by Hittites 2000 BCE, and was Assyrian from 853 BCE. It was taken by Muslims in 638 CE, and became a major site along the Silk Road. The city was recovered by the Greeks 969, and besieged by Crusaders in 1118, 1124. Later, it was sacked by Mongols in 1260, captured by Ottomans 1517, and eventually taken by British and Arabs in 1918. |
