Note: Formerly was an important town on the Silk Road caravan route from Iran across northern Mesopotamia. It was taken by Muslims in 636, and was later under Mongolian, Persian, and Turkish rule. It became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1534. It was awarded to Iraq by the League of Nations in 1925. The city has many mosques and ancient sites. |
