Note: Hard leather shields used by light calvary and designed specifically for riding riding with a short stirrup with knees bent. They were originally of a round or heart shape, then generally created in the shape of a pair of overlapping ellipses or ovals. They were originally used by the Moors, then by Spain; the form came to North America when Cortés entered Mexico in the early 16th century.

Dutch ..... Harde leren schilden die werden gebruikt door de lichte cavalerie en waren bedoeld voor paardrijden met een korte stijgbeugel en gebogen knieën. Oorspronkelijk waren ze rond of hartvormig, maar later hadden ze gewoonlijk de vorm van twee overlappende ellipsen of ovalen. Oorspronkelijk werden ze gebruikt door de Moren, later door de Spanjaarden. Cortez introduceerde ze in Noord-Amerika toen hij aan het begin van de zestiende eeuw Mexico binnentrok.

Spanish ..... Escudos de cuero duro utilizados por el calvario ligero y diseñados específicamente para motar a caballo con un estribo corto con las rodillas dobladas. Originalmente tenían forma redonda o de corazón y generalmente se creaban en forma de un par de elipses u óvalos superpuestos. Originalmente fueron utilizados por los moros, luego por España; la forma llegó a Norteamérica cuando Cortés ingresó a México a principios del siglo XVI.
