| German ..... Imago clipeata , von lateinisch imago, "Bildnis", und clipeus, "Rundschild",Bezeichnung für einen auf einem metallenen Rundschild angebrachten Bildniskopf. Es wurden meist berühmte Vorfahren, Militärs oder Konsuln auf diese Weise dargestellt. Von Konsul Appius Claudius Caecus (307-296 v. Chr.) ist überliefert, dass er Imago clipeata mit Darstellungen seiner Vorfahren den Göttern als Geschenk weihte. Seit dem 1. Jh. v. Chr. wurden Imagines clipeata auch in Stein gehauen, als Schmuckform auf Pfeilern. Seit dieser Zeit gibt es Ausführungen, bei denen das Bildnis in einer konkav ausgeführten Scheibe eingesetzt ist. Solche Darstellungen sind in der * frühchristlichen Kunst u. a. auch von Christus und Bischöfen zu finden.
