Note: Bone-like structures found in the mouths of many vertebrates, used for biting and chewing. Some also use teeth for hunting and defensive purposes. The roots of teeth anchor the teeth in the jaw; they are covered by gums. Teeth are not technically made of bone, but rather of multiple tissues of varying density and hardness. The cellular tissues that develop as teeth originate in the the ectoderm. The general structure of teeth is similar across the vertebrates, but there is variation in placement and form. Monophyodonts develop only one set of teeth for use in adulthood, while polyphyodonts develop many sets of teeth.

Dutch ..... Botachtige structuren die in de mond van veel gewervelden groeien en worden gebruikt om te bijten en te kauwen. Sommige soorten gebruiken hun tanden ook bij het jagen of om zich mee te verdedigen. Tandwortels verankeren de tanden in de kaak en worden bedekt door tandvlees. Technisch gezien bestaan tanden niet uit bot, maar uit verschillende weefsels van verschillende dicht- en hardheid. De celweefsels waaruit tanden zich ontwikkelen komen voort uit het ectoderm. De algemene structuur van tanden is bij alle gewervelden soortgelijk, maar hun plaatsing en vorm loopt uiteen. Bij de monophyodonten groeit er maar een enkele set tanden voor het volwassen dier, terwijl er bij polyphyodonten meerdere sets groeien.
