Note: A Peranakan Chinese bulbous, tub-like container with a dome-shaped lid that usually can be found in Peranakan households. The bodies of the kamcheng may have small handles, and the lids, may be topped by an auspicious animal design. Kamcheng can be found in a range of sizes. Kamcheng are usually designed with Peranakan Chinese motifs which have auspicious symbolisms such as peonies, phoenixes, the eight auspicious Buddhist emblems, butterflies, and other flowers. The term “kamcheng” in Hokkien (a Chinese dialect) means “covered jar”. It is an important ware in Peranakan Chinese wedding ceremonies. On a day-to-day basis, a kamcheng is used for serving and storing different types of food such as pickles and rice. Smaller kamcheng have also been used to store cosmetic products.
