Note: Hydrostatic devices, comprising iron plates and a pressing board, used to give woolen and worsted cloth a smooth and lustrous finish. Once arranged in regular folds on the device's pressing board, the cloth is sandwiched between hot plates with applied pressure until the plates cool. Cold iron or hollow plates are used in conjuction with the hot plates to moderate the temperature and prevent the heat from scorching the cloth.
