Note: Paintings with subject matter of interest to women, particularly romances such as the Tale of Genji. There are few if any contemporary definitions of the term, resulting in ambiguity about the style of painting or the gender of the artists creating these works. This term was used in the Heian period (794-1185). For paintings or prints that depict the beauty of women, see also "bijinga," a term coined in the Edo (1615-1868) or Meiji (1868-1912) period. |

Dutch ..... Schilderijen met een onderwerp dat vrouwen gewoonlijk interessant vonden, met name liefdesgeschiedenissen, zoals het verhaal van prins Genji. Er zijn hoogstens een paar hedendaagse definities van deze term, die echter aanleiding geven tot onduidelijkheid over de schilderstijl en het soort artiesten dat deze werken creëerde.
