Note: A style, particularly in the context of interior design, characterized by European or American antiques or replicas of antiques that that show evidence of wear and age, such as layers of paint that are worn and chipped and faded or muted fabrics. The style first developed in Britain. The term was coined in the "World of Interiors" magazine in the 1980s and has become a registered trademark for a US company.

De stijl ontstond in Groot-BrittanniĆ«. De term werd in de jaren tachtig van de 20ste eeuw bedacht door het tijdschrift 'World of Interiors' en is inmiddels een geregistreerd handelsmerk van een Amerikaans bedrijf.
