Note: Refers to the style that marks the traditioinal beginning of Gothic style in England around 1290, when Edward I erected a number of crosses, with distinctive ornamentation and architectural elements, to commemorate the queen, Eleanor of Castille. The term was coined in the early 19th century and then referred primarily to window tracery, but is now understood to apply to the style more broadly. The style has its roots in the royal London style and French Rayonnant Gothic, and is characterized by immense glazed surfaces, rectilinear apses, thick walls instead of the Continental buttressing system, and intricate decoration composed of lively geometric and organic forms.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de stijl die van oudsher wordt beschouwd als het begin van de gotiek in Engeland, rond 1290, toen koning Edward I een aantal kruisen met kenmerkende versieringen en architectonische elementen oprichtte om de koningin, Eleanora van Castilië, te herdenken. De term werd voor het eerst gebruikt in het begin van de 19de eeuw en verwees toen voornamelijk naar venstermaaswerk. Tegenwoordig wordt de term in een veel bredere betekenis gebruikt. De stijl wortelt in de koninklijke Londense stijl en het Rayonnant van de Franse gotiek, en wordt gekenmerkt door immense geglazuurde oppervlakken, rechtlijnige apsissen, dikke muren in plaats van het continentale systeem met steunberen, en ingewikkelde versieringen van levendige geometrische en organische vormen. |
