Note: Refers to the period and style of the Franks, a Germanic tribe living along the east bank of the lower Rhine river by at least the third century CE. The style is especially associated with the westward expansion of the Franks across the Rhine in Gaul by gradual settlement and conquest, notably by the Merovingian, Clovis, beginning in the fifth century CE and lasting for centuries. Early Frankish art continued the existing Early Christian traditions of the area, except in the field of metalwork, where the Franks had a strong tradition of their own. With time, the Frankish style was especially strong in architecture, sculpture, and manuscript illumination, and is often characterized by colorful, flat, busy compositions of ornate linear pattern, and an abundance of animals, fish, and birds.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de periode en stijl van de Franken, een Germaanse stam die in ieder geval vanaf de 3de eeuw n. Chr. langs de oostelijke oever van de benedenloop van de Rijn leefde. De stijl wordt in het bijzonder geassocieerd met de expansie van de Franken in westelijke richting aan de overkant van de Rijn, in Gallië, door geleidelijke kolonisatie en verovering, met name onder leiding van de Merovingische koning Clovis. Deze expansie begon in de 5de eeuw en heeft eeuwen geduurd.De vroegste Frankische kunst zette de bestaande vroeg-christelijke tradities van de streek voort, behalve op het gebied van metaalwerk, waar de Franken een sterke eigen traditie hadden. In de loop van de tijd werd de Frankische traditie vooral sterk in de architectuur, de beeldhouwkunst en de verluchting van manuscripten. Kenmerkend zijn vaak de kleurrijke, vlakke, drukke composities met sierlijke lijnpatronen en een overvloed aan vissen, vogels en andere dieren. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere al período y estilo de los Francos, una tribu germánica que habitó a lo largo de la ribera oriental del bajo río Rhin alrededor de, a lo menos, el siglo III d.C. El estilo es especialmente asociado con la expansión hacia el oeste de los Francos a lo largo del Rhin en Galia por medio el asentamiento y conquista gradual, notablemente por los Merovingios, Clovis, empezando en el V siglo d.C. y subsistiendo durante siglos. El arte Franco Temprano mantuvo las tradiciones Paleocristianas existentes del área, excepto en el campo del trabajo metalúrgico, donde los Francos tenían una fuerte tradición propia. Con tiempo, el estilo Franco fue especialmente fuerte en arquitectura, escultura y la ilustración de manuscritos y se caracteriza frecuentemente por composiciones llenas, coloridas, planas, de decorado diseño lineal y una abundancia de animales, peces y pájaros. |
