Eilanden of (relatief) droge stukken land die omringd zijn door water of lage draslanden; een groep eilanden wordt als archipel beschouwd als zij een hoge mate van compactheid hebben en dicht bij elkaar liggen. De oorspronkelijke Griekse betekenis van het woord verwees naar het water waarin zulke eilanden zich bevinden. |
