Note: Small portable altars, most often made of terracotta, but also of stone. These usually have a square or rectangular shape with varying dimensions. Arulae are considered too small to have been used for animal sacrifice, and are commonly decorated with moldings at top and bottom and with molded reliefs on one or more sides. Characteristic products of South Italy and Sicily from the the second quarter of the sixth century through the Roman period. They have been found in sanctuaries, near or inside graves, and in habitation sites.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Kleine, draagbare altaars, meestal gemaakt van terracotta, maar soms ook wel van steen. Gewoonlijk hebben ze een vierkante of rechthoekige vorm, maar het precieze formaat verschilt. Arulae waren waarschijnlijk te klein om voor dierenoffers gebruikt te worden, en ze zijn vaak versierd met gietwerk aan de boven- en onderkant en reliëfs aan één of meer van de zijkanten. Deze karakteristieke Zuid-Italiaanse en Siciliaanse producten werden gemaakt vanaf het tweede kwart van de 6e eeuw v.Chr. tot het einde van de Romeinse tijd. Ze zijn gevonden nabij of in graven, in heiligdommen en op bewoonde plaatsen.
