Note: Describes the style and culture of the inhabitants of Buka Island. Changes in late 20th-century Buka art have their origins in the encounter between Pacific Islanders and the outside world. Whale hunters of the 1800s found the Buka paddles ideally suited to their work; as a result promoting the production of paddles by the Buka people. Lapita pottery and related materials have varied in style into the late 20th century. The people of Buka are known to represent human and animal forms in a naturalistic fashion, however human heads are also constructed in a canine-like style with the jaw protruded outward. Surfaces are often stained black and enhanced with inlaid patterns of red and white pigments.

| Dutch ..... Beschrijft werken die zijn vervaardigd door de bewoners van het eiland Buka. Veranderingen in de Bukakunst aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw zijn toe te schrijven aan de kennismaking van de eilandbewoners in de Stille Zuidzee met de buitenwereld. In de 19de eeuw ontdekten walvisvaarders dat de Bukapeddels perfect geschikt waren voor hun werk en gingen ze de productie van peddels door de Buka stimuleren. Tot aan het einde van de 20ste eeuw waren er stijlvarianten te herkennen in het Lapita-aardewerk en de bijbehorende materialen. De bevolking van Buka staat bekend om haar naturalistische afbeeldingen van menselijke en dierlijke vormen; de menselijke hoofden vertonen evenwel hondachtige trekken, met een sterk naar voren stekende kaak. Het oppervlak is vaak zwart gevlekt en verfraaid met ingelegde patronen van rode en witte pigmenten. |

Los cambios en el arte durante fined del siglo XX tienen sus orígenes en el encuentro entre los isleños del Pacífico y el mundo exterior. Cazadores de ballenas del siglo XIX consideraron los remos Buka ideales para su trabajo; dando como resultado el ascenso en la producción de remos por parte del pueblo Buka. La cerámica Lapita y materiales relacionados han variado en estilo desde fines del siglo XX. El pueblo Buka es conocido por representar formas humanas y de animales de manera naturalista, sin embargo las cabezas humanas también son realizadas en un estilo de forma canina con mandíbulas protuberantes y salientes. Muchas veces las superficies son manchadas de negro y realzadas con diseños incrustados de pigmentos rojo o blanco. |
