Note: Developed in 1939 at I.G. Farbenindustrie (which marketed it as Perlon), nylon 6 was developed as a dyable, durable nylon fiber intended to compete with DuPont's nylon 6,6. It is very similar but has a lower melting point and a greater affinity for dyes. The two types of polyamide fiber remain the most commonly used by the textile and plastics industries worldwide. It is formed by polymerizing caprolactam under high pressure and is thus also known as polycaprolactam.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Nylon 6 werd in 1939 ontwikkeld bij I.G. Farbenindustrie (en op de markt gebracht als Perlon). Het werd gemaakt als verfbare, duurzame nylonvezel en moest de concurrentie aangaan met nylon 6,6 van DuPont. Het lijkt hier erg op maar heeft een lager smeltpunt en is geschikter voor verfstoffen. Deze twee typen polyamidevezel worden wereldwijd nog steeds het meest gebruikt in de textiel- en plasticindustrie. Nylon 6 wordt gevormd door caprolactam te polymeriseren onder hoge druk en wordt daarom ook wel 'polycaprolactam' genoemd.
