Record Type: concept
geophones (<temporary alphabetical list: geophysical instruments>, geophysical instruments, ... Furnishings and Equipment (hierarchy name))

Note: This instrument functions as a seismograph. It consists of a cast-iron ring suspended by a lead weight, which is fastened with a single bolt through two metal disks and rubber tubes that must be connected to stethoscope earpieces to hear sounds transmitted through the earth. The geophone needs to be placed on the ground to receive the energy transmitted as wave motion through the earth. It then transforms the seismic waves of the ground into sound waves, which can be heard through the earpieces.
