dead languages (languages (established systems of communication), <languages and writing systems by general type>, ... Associated Concepts (hierarchy name)) |
Note: Languages that are no longer spoken by native speakers. While the term may have overlapping usage with "extinct languages," an extinct language typically is limited to languages having no descendents. For example, Latin is a dead language but not extinct, because it has several descendent languages and is read and even spoken by scholars and in the Vatican. |

Additional Notes: |
Dutch ..... Talen die niet meer door moedertaalsprekers worden gesproken. De term kan in het gebruik overlappen met 'uitgestorven talen', maar 'uitgestorven taal' wordt meestal gebruikt voor talen waarvan geen enkele taal afstamt. Latijn is bijvoorbeeld een dode, maar geen uitgestorven taal, omdat er diverse talen van afstammen en omdat het wordt gelezen en zelfs gesproken door wetenschappers en in het Vaticaan.
