Note: On the geologic time scale, the youngest epoch of the Tertiary, or of the more recently designated Neogene, following Miocene and preceding the Pleistocene epoch of the Quaternary period. It extends from about 5 million to 1.8 million years ago. The Pliocene is marked by the change to a cooler, dry seasonal climate and the presence of essentially modern flora and fauna.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Op de geologische tijdschaal het laatste tijdvak van het tertiair, ofwel van het meer recent gebruikte neogeen. Het kwam na het mioceen en vóór het tijdvak pleistoceen in het quartair, en duurde van ongeveer 5 miljoen tot 1,8 miljoen jaar geleden. Het plioceen werd getypeerd door een verschuiving naar koudere, drogere seizoenen en de aanwezigheid van feitelijk moderne flora en fauna.
