Note: Refers to needle lace created in Venice primarily during the 16th through 19th centuries. It also refers to imitations of Venetian lace made later and/or in other locations. It is characterized by a sumptuousness defined by the large size of the pieces of lace and by the rich high-relief patterns and Baroque designs. Early examples were created by stitching together sections of deep, acute-angled points of lacework, which were typically used for making ruffs and collars known as "vandykes." Later designs were more curvilinear. Lace making declined in Venice proper in the early 19th century, but lace is still made on the nearby island of Burano.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar naaldkant die vooral van de 16de tot en met de 19de eeuw in Venetië werd gemaakt. De term verwijst ook naar imitaties van Venetiaanse kant die later en/of elders werden gemaakt. Venetiaanse kant wordt gekenmerkt door weelderigheid als gevolg van het gebruik van de grote stukken kant, rijke haut-reliëfpatronen en barokmotieven. Vroege voorbeelden werden gemaakt door het aan elkaar stikken van diepe, scherphoekige kantpunten en werden meestal gebruikt voor het fabriceren van fraises en kragen die 'vandykes' werden genoemd. Latere ontwerpen waren meer kromlijnig. De Venetiaanse kantmakerij raakte in de vroege 19de eeuw in verval, maar er wordt nog steeds kant gemaakt op het nabijgelegen eiland Burano. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a encaje a aguja creado en Venecia principalmente durante los siglos XVI al XIX. También se refiere a imitaciones del encaje veneciano hecho posteriormente y/o en otros lugares. Se caracteriza por una suntuosidad definida por el gran tamaño de las piezas de encaje y por los ricos motivos en algo relieve y diseños barrocos. Ejemplos tempranos fueron creados al unir secciones de profundos y agudos y angulosos puntos de encajes, los cuales fueron usados para hacer golas y cuellos conocidos como "vandyke." Después los diseños se realizaron de modo más curvilíneo. La fabricación de encajes declinó en Venecia exactamente a comienzos del siglo XIX, pero aún se hace encaje en las cercanias de la isla Burano.
