Note: Refers to the period and culture of Upper Paleolithic Europe that is named after the rock shelter of La Madeleine in Dordogne, France, and existed from roughly 17,000 to 11,000 Before Present. The culture is characterized by the establishment of permanent or seasonal settlements, the exploitation of a wide variety of plant and animal food sources, including the use of snares and traps, and great ingenuity in toolmaking, decorative forms, and art. Tools were made of bone and stone and include geometrically shaped blades and other implements set into bone and antler handles, burins, needles, scrapers, borers, backed blades, harpoons, and leaf-shaped projectile points. Artistic production includes monumental cave engraving and painting, engraving of bone tools, sculpture, and jewelry. The earlier theme of animals is continued in art of this period, but the style is distinguished from earlier art in mural painting by lively realism, expressive poses, and successful rendering of volume, and in portable works by delicate carving of detail and the development of cohesive compositions through the depiction of multiple animals together as if in a scene.

Verwijst naar de periode en cultuur van het hoog-paleolithische Europa, die is vernoemd naar de grot van Madeleine in de Franse Dordogne en die van ruwweg 17.000 jaar geleden tot 11.000 jaar geleden bestond. De cultuur kenmerkt zich door het ontstaan van permanente of seizoensnederzettingen, het gebruik van een grote verscheidenheid aan planten en dieren, onder andere door het gebruik van strikken en vallen, en de ingenieuze vervaardiging van werktuigen, decoratieve vormen en kunstvoorwerpen. Gereedschappen werden gemaakt van bot en steen en hebben geometrisch gevormde snijbladen. Er zijn ook andere werktuigen van bot en geweien, graveerijzers, naalden, schrapers, boren, snijbladen met achterkanten, harpoenen en bladvormige punten voor projectielen. De artistieke productie bestond uit monumentale inscripties en schilderingen in grotten, bewerken van botten werktuigen, beeldhouwwerk en juwelen. Het vroegere thema van dieren wordt tijdens deze periode voortgezet in de kunst, maar de stijl wijkt bij muurschilderingen af van eerder kunst door het levendige realisme, de expressieve houdingen en de geslaagde weergave van volume, en in andere, verplaatsbare werken door het verfijnde, gedetailleerde snijwerk en de ontwikkeling van samenhangende composities door de gezamenlijke weergave van meerdere dieren, zoals in een tafereel. |

Se refiere al período y cultura de Europa Paleolítica Superior que lleva el nombre del refugio de piedra de La Madeleine en Dordogne, Francia, y que existió desde aproximadamente el 17.000 al 11.000 antes del presente. La cultura se caracteriza por el establecimiento de establecimientos permanentes o estacionales, la explotación de una variedad amplia de fuentes de alimentación vegetales y animales, que incluyen el uso de asecho y trampas, y gran ingeniosidad en la fabricación de herramientas, formas decorativas, y arte. Se fabricaban herramientas de hueso y piedra que incluyen las hojas de cuchilla formadas geométricamente y otros utensilios fijos a mangos de hueso y cornamenta, buriles, agujas, raspadores, perforadores, cuchillos con lomo, arpones, y puntas de proyectil en forma de hoja.
