Note: Refers to an early culture and style that existed mainly in the Sonoran Desert of what is now central and southern Arizona. The culture is noted for the first use of irrigation by the southwestern farmers, for the establishment of permanent settlements of pit houses and above-ground apartment-like structures, and for distinctive tools and art works, including ornaments and mosaics fashioned of shells imported from the Gulf of California, clay figurines, and pottery, which is gray ware or buff with decoration in iron red. Some experts believe that the Hohokam arrived in the area around 300 BCE, while others place their arrival around 500 CE. Disagreement also exists regarding their origins, which may be either from Mexico or as descendents of the Cochise people. Further disagreement exists regarding whether their descendants are Papago, Pima, and other Southwestern groups, or if the Hohokam moved out of the area in the fifteenth century.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een vroege cultuur en stijl die voornamelijk voorkwam in de Sonoran-woestijn, in het huidige midden en zuiden van Arizona. De cultuur is opmerkelijk door het eerste gebruik van irrigatie door boeren in het zuidwesten, door het ontstaan van permanente nederzettingen van kuilwoningen en bovengrondse flat-achtige constructies, en door de specifieke werktuigen en kunstvoorwerpen, zoals ornamenten en mozaïeken van schelpen uit de golf van Californië, kleibeeldjes en aardewerk. Dit is gemaakt van grijze klei of geglazuurd met versieringen in ijzerrood. Sommige specialisten geloven dat de Hohokam rond 300 v. Chr. naar het gebied zijn gekomen, anderen gaan ervan uit dat dit pas rond het jaar 500 is gebeurd. Ook is men het oneens over de afkomst. De Hohokam zouden uit Mexico afkomstig kunnen zijn of afstammelingen zijn van het Cochise-volk. Bovendien is men het niet eens over de vraag of de Papago, de Pima en andere volken in het Zuidwesten de nakomelingen van de Hohakam zijn, of dat het volk het gebied in de 15e eeuw heeft verlaten. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a una antigua cultura y estilo que existió principalmente en el Desierto de Sonora en lo que es ahora Arizona central y del sur. La cultura es conocida por el primer uso de irrigación por los granjeros del sudoeste, por el establecimiento de poblados permanentes de casas en fosos y estructuras semejantes a bloques sobre la superficie y por herramientas características y obras de arte, incluyendo ornamentos y mosaicos modelados con conchas importadas del Golfo de California, estatuillas de arcilla y alfarería que es cerámica gris o amarilla con adornos en rojo hierro. Algunos expertos creen que los Hohokam llegaron al área alrededor de 300 a.C, mientras otros sitúan su arribo alrededor del año 500 a.C. Existen tambien diferencias respecto a su origen que puede ser México o descendientes del pueblo Cochise. Existen discrepancias adicionales respecto a si sus descendientes son los Papago, los Pima y otros grupos del sudoeste, o si los Hohokam se fueron del área en el siglo XV. |
