Een brandbare, modderachtige, zwarte sedimentafzetting die rijk is aan stikstof en onder anaerobe omstandigheden op de bodem van meren en zeeën ontstaat door de ontbinding van micro-organismen. Wanneer sapropeel tot hard steen wordt samengedrukt, verandert het in olieschalie of sapropelisch kool. |
