Note: Movement in German film lasting from about 1969 and into the 1980s that saw the emergence of a new group of director, among them Werner Rainer Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, and Werner Herzog. In 1974, the Federal Republic's main broadcasters, ARD and ZDF, and the German Federal Film Board, provided for the television companies to make available an annual sum to support the production of films shown in theaters and on television. As a result, the films were artistically ambitious and critically acclaimed, despite their limited budgets. Well known films include Fassbinder's "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" (1972) and Schlöndorff's "The Tin Drum" (1979).

Stroming in de Duitse film die duurde van ongeveer 1969 tot de jaren 80 van de 20ste eeuw en die zorgde voor de opkomst van een nieuwe groep regisseurs, onder wie Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff en Werner Herzog. Vanaf 1974 stelden de West-Duitse zendgemachtigden ARD en ZDF en het Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA) jaarlijks een geldbedrag beschikbaar aan televisieproducenten voor de productie van films voor bioscopen en televisie. De films waren in artistiek opzicht ambitieus en werden goed ontvangen, ondanks het beperkte budget. Beroemde films in deze stroming zijn Fassbinders 'Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant' (1972) en Schlöndorffs 'Die Blechtrommel' (1979). |
