Full Citation
Short Citation
Author Name
Author Role
These categories complement the Short Citation category in entries, in much the way that a bibliography
relates to footnotes in a publication. This section is designed to
record fuller information concerning bibliographic items and
references. The most flexible approach for generating bibliographies
would be to create a bibliographic authority file linked to Groups/Items,
Subjects/BuiltWorks, and People/Corporate
Bodies. This would make it possible to produce bibliographies
and/or bibliographic references for any permutation of access-point
categories (e.g., for all records of items that have as their subject
St. Peter's, Rome ).
Full citations include author names, titles, and place, year of
publication, and other information. Each item is also given a short
citation (author name and year of publication). It is the short
citation, rather than the full citation, that is recorded under
Bibliographic References in Groups/Items
and Subjects/Built Works. By recording both
types of citations in the authority file, it is possible to provide
the authority control for citations made elsewhere.
The names of authors are recorded separately\x97as well
as in the full citation\x97in order to allow for retrieval, sorting,
and production of bibliographies by these names. The page
numbers of individual bibliographic references are not recorded.
The exception is articles in journals and essays in works
by more than one author. The first and last page numbers of
articles and essays in books by more than one author are recorded
under Full Citation, but specific page numbers cited in references
are not. See Page Reference in Bibliographic References (Groups/Items
and Subjects/Built Works).
Category:
Full Citation
Definition:
This category provides a short (abbreviated) citation that
stands for the full citation. It may include the author and
year of publication, e.g., Bold, 1989. Page numbers
are recorded separately under Page Reference.
Implementation:
access point
optional
single occurrence
Discussion:
This category is used to record free-text descriptions of
bibliographic items. It can be used to produce bibliographies for gro
ups/items and subjects/built works.
Example:
John Bold, John Webb: Architectural Theory and Practice in the
Seventeenth Century, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1989.
Implementation:
descriptive
optional
single occurrence

Category:
Author Name
Definition:
The name(s) of the creator(s) of a bibliographic item, e.g.,
author(s), editor(s), and illustrator(s).
Discussion:
This category allows for retrieval of bibliographic items by author

of names recorded.
In cases of multiple authorship, the names of all authors should
be recorded.
Terminology:
See People/Corporate Bodies authority guidelines under Name.
Implementation:

authority-controlled
optional

Category:
Author Role
Definition:
The role that a person played in the making of a bibliographic
item.
Discussion:
A person can have a role in relationship to a bibliographic item
(e.g., editor), just as he or she can have a role in
relationship to an item (e.g., draftsman), a subject (e.g.,
architect), or a life role (e.g., monarch).

Suggested terminology for this category:
