Explore the splendor of manuscript painting from the 1100s to its extraordinary flowering in the 1400s and 1500s in the exhibition Illuminated Manuscripts from Belgium and the Netherlands.
Adapt the lesson "Create an Illuminated Alphabet Word Book" to have students individually create a manuscript page of real and imagined beasts. Then create a second copy for a collaborative class bestiary.
Lesson Plan: Create an Illuminated Alphabet Word Book
Exhibition: Illuminated Manuscripts from Belgium and the Netherlands is on view at the Getty Center through February 6, 2011.
