Secondary level teachers learn about and experiment with strategies used by photographers to picture the famous, from the 1840s to the year 2000. This workshop is designed to allow for small-group discussion and will give teachers the opportunity to discover and share classroom connections to the exhibition Portraits of Renown: Photography and the Cult of Celebrity.

Interdisciplinary Ideas for the K–5 Classroom: Art & Language Arts Culminating Event
Saturday, April 14, 2012, 1:00–4:30 p.m.

Connect art to the lives of elementary students! Learn how to enliven your language-arts curricula with visual art. During this culminating event for the Museum's annual, year-long Art & Language Arts program, elementary teachers will present curricula they designed as participants. Internationally acclaimed artist Kim Abeles will share insights about her work and the impact of art on her life. You will receive over 30 arts-integrated lesson plans, view student work, and get inspired!

Aphrodite: Beyond the Expected
Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 4:00–6:00 p.m.
The Getty Villa

Antiquities curator David Saunders leads this in-depth exploration of the exhibition Aphrodite and the Gods of Love, which highlights the complex nature of Aphrodite and her companions. Learn how to reveal lesser-known aspects about Aphrodite through these artworks, such as her origins in the ancient Near East, her roles as civic protectress and helper to sailors, and the troublesome character of her companion Eros.
