René I, King of Naples and Jerusalem (Neapolitan king, 1409-1480)
|
Note: Second son of Louis II, duke d’Anjou, and Yolanda of Aragon. Duke of Bar (from 1434), duke of Anjou (from 1430), and count of Provence and of Piedmont. He was also titular king of Naples from 1435 to 1442 and duke consort of Lorraine from 1431 to 1453. While the king by tradition was believed to be an amateur painter, works formerly attributed to him in Anjou and Provence are now believed to have been executed under his patronage, but not by the king himself as artist. He is better documented to have been an avid patron and to have formed a school of the fine arts in sculpture, painting, goldsmith's work and tapestry. Comment on works: Painter; Medalist; Amateur Poet; Artisan; Jeweller |
