Sim Jeongju (Korean painter, 1678-1750)
|
Note: Sim Jeongju was a painter and literati active between the mid- and late Joseon periods. He was a father of Sim Sajeong (1707-1769), a master of the Southern School of Painting in the late Joseon period. After the downfall of his prestigious family due to their involvement in treasonous events, he never again pursued a government post and spent the rest of his life painting. Sim was particularly famous for his grape paintings, which are characterized by a large depiction of a single cluster of grapes and simple grape stalks. The vines are painted in swift and dry brushstrokes. Overlapping parts of some grapes are depicted only by varying the ink tones, and the leaf veins are briefly drawn in ink lines. |
