Record Type: Person
Sim Sajeong (Korean painter, 1707-1769)

Note: Active during the reign of King Yŏnjo. He was the scion of a family of government officials that had fallen from favor. He devoted his life to the study of painting, and lived in a valley near what is now Seoul West Gate, alone and in poverty. He was well known as a landscape artist of the Southern School, derived from the Chinese Wu School of the Ming dynasty. He also did portraits, bird, flower, and insect paintings. Sim Sajeong was a literati painter in the late Joseon period. After his prestigious family known for artistic talent fell into disfavor following treasonous actions by his grandfather, Sim gave up the life of a scholar-official and made a living by painting. He studied painting under Jeong Seon (1676-1759), the master of "true-view" landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa). He played a significant role in the establishment and popularization of the Chinese Southern school painting style in Korea during the late Joseon period by integrating the Southern painting style with traditional Korean painting and creating Korean-style Southern School paintings that differed from the Chinese archetypes. His landscape, bird-and-flower, figure, and finger paintings influenced literati painters like Jeong Su-yeong (1743-1831) and Bak Jega (1750-after1805) and professional painters such as Yi Inmun (1745-after 1824) and Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806).
