Amasis Painter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 560-ca. 515 BCE)
|
Note: This ancient Greek painter and potter had a long career and his name is known by eight signed vases. He was prolific, with over 130 surviving works attributed to him. He is considered an individualist in the history of Athenian vase painting. His distinctive work is characterized by its wit, delicate touch and precise incision. His compositions are often full but never cluttered and his figures are often small but never fussy. He depicted traditional as well as unusual mythological subjects with perhaps a deeper interest in Dionysian imagery. He also depicted scenes of daily life, the most famous being on two lekythoi (now in New York); one of the lekythoi is decorated with the fullest pictorial record of an Attic rural wedding. Amasis created vases in a variety of shapes, including a number of belly amphorae, neck amphorae, cups, and oinochoai; he also created some rare shapes such as the aryballos and the mastoid. The Amasis Painter was an apprentice in Athens, in the shops of the Siana cup painters and especially of the Heidelberg Painter. "Amasis" is a Hellenized form of the Egyptian Ahmosis, a common Egyptian name so the artist may be of part-Egyptian origin. He was the father of the potter Kleophrades. |
