Delessert, Benjamin (French photographer and publisher, 1817-1868)
|
Note: Born 15 November 1817; died 25 January 1868. Delessert was introduced to photography in 1840, along with his cousin Edouard Delessert, probably by Gustave Le Gray. He was a founding member of the Société Héliographique in 1851. In 1853 Delessert attempted the first full-scale effort to reproduce the work of an artist photographically. He photographed the engravings of Marc-Antonio Raimondi and included writings on his life. This first attempt to make art available to the public at a low cost was printed by Blanquart-Evrard and published by Goupil from 1854 to 1856 under the name "Notice sur la vie de Marc Antoine Raimondi, graveur bolonais, accompagnée de reproductions photographiques de quelques-unes de ses estampes". In 1854 Delessert was a founding member of the Société française de photographie. |
