Master Bertram (German painter, illuminator, and possibly woodcarver, died 1414 or 1415)

Note: Possibly born in Minden. His Grabow Altarpiece, a combination of carved figures and painted scenes, is one of the high points of late 14th-century north German art. There are many documentary references to him in Hamburg in which he is referred to as 'painter,' although he was also responsible for coloring statues and the designs of the sculpture for some of his altars have been attributed to him. His lively narrative style, with its expressive and forceful gestures, was highly influential for early German artists. Comment on works: Religious (Painter and Sculptor)
