Record Type: Person
Master of the Munich Betrayal (Netherlandish painter, active ca. 1455-1480)

Note: W. Schöne attributed two works, the Arrest of Christ and the Resurrection (both in Munich), traditionally ascribed to Dieric Bouts the Elder, to this anonymous artist whom he considered a close follower of Bouts and Ouwater. Another ten paintings usually attributed to Bouts are considered by Schöne to be in the oeuvre of the Master of the Munich Betrayal. Among these were the altarpiece of St. Hippolytus (Bruges) and the Coronation of the Virgin (Vienna). The main works in Munich were originally part of a larger altarpiece from the St. Lorenzkirche in Cologne. Many scholars have rejected Schöne's attributions.
