Note: Gorgān is located around 20 miles inland from Caspian Sea on a tributary of the Qareh River, and has been in existence from Achaemenian times. It was captured by Arabs in 716 and by Mongols in the 13th century. The town was subject to attacks by Turkmen tribes who occupied the north of the river. In the 19th century, the city suffered from continuous Qajar and Turkmen tribal conflict. Gorgān is the birthplace of founder of Qajar dynasty of Persia (1779-1924), Aga Muhammad Khan. |
