Note: City surrounded by mountains in southeastern Iran. It was probably founded by the Sāsānian king Ardashīr I (reg 224-241 CE). Two monuments supposedly from Arshaīr's rule still remain, Qal'a-i Ardashir and the Qal'a-i Dukhtar. Because city walls were built when Kermān became the provincial capital, the region has enjoyed a prosperous history. First known as a popular area for manuscript illumination in the 14th century, from the 16th century until today the city is known for its carpet and shawl production. Kermān is comprised of a Persian-spreaking Muslim population and a Zoroastrian minority. |
